Case Study: Glenn Fisher – Excelling His Career with Skills Support for the Workforce Programme

Glenn Fisher, a Project Supervisor from Innovation On-Site Ltd, is a shining example of how the Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) programme, co-financed by the European Social Fund and the Education and Skills Funding Agency, is making a difference.

Background and challenges

Glenn had been a Carpenter for several years before branching out into other aspects of the construction trade. However, Glenn faced challenges in the academic side of the NVQ L2 in Plant (Slinger/Signaller) qualification, which he undertook thanks to SSW. Although he knew his job inside and out, he struggled when it came to reading and processing some of the job knowledge questions.

SSW intervention

Innovation On-Site Ltd sought more qualified plant machine handlers within their business and offered Glenn and four others the opportunity to undertake the NVQ Level 2 in Plant (Slinger/Signaller), a qualification that allows access to bigger projects and building sites, thus excelling their careers.

The qualification was an onsite assessment whereby one of the assessors was assigned to the candidate, an induction onto the NVQ was given, job knowledge questions were completed and site assessment visits were carried out. Glenn had to complete many tasks under the watchful eye of the assessor, ensuring correct procedures were followed and all health & safety regulations were adhered to.

SSW Impact:

The qualification took Glenn roughly four months to complete, and in the end, he received his NVQ L2 Certificate and Blue CSCS card. Glenn’s role within Innovation On-Site Ltd is that of a supervisor and overseer of several projects. He has a team of people that report to him daily, and he has a clear thirst for knowledge.

Glenn plans to continue adding strings to his bow, working his way up the ladder within Innovation On-Site Ltd. Glenn is currently enrolled in the NVQ L4 in Site Supervision, and an L6 Management Qualification could be on the cards for the not-too-distant future!

Benefits and testimonial:

Glenn sums up his time on the NVQ by saying, “If I had to sum up my time on the NVQ, I’d say what a great experience! The whole process from start to finish was just brilliant. I’d happily do it all over again (and I guess I am with the NVQ L4). I can’t thank my assessor enough. He went to great lengths to accommodate and help me, and for that, I am very grateful!”

SSW Provider and feedback:

S R Partnership Ltd, part of Serco’s network of expert organisations chosen to deliver the SSW programme, introduced Innovation On-Site Ltd to the programme. SRP has been delivering funded and non-funded NVQs for Innovation On-Site Ltd ever since. Working with Kerry and the team at Innovation On-Site Ltd has always been an absolute pleasure for SRP. They are thrilled to hear such great feedback from Glenn regarding his NVQ and look forward to supporting him through future educational ventures.

Conclusion:

Glenn’s case study highlights the positive impact that upskilling can have on individuals and businesses and serves as an inspiration to others looking to improve their skills and progress in their careers. His story is a great example of how the SSW programme is providing recognised accredited qualifications and bespoke training courses to enhance employees’ skills, increase the competitiveness of businesses, and boost the local economy.
