Case Study: Lewis Bloomfield – From Teaching Assistant to Skilled Roofer

Background:

Lewis Bloomfield, a self-employed roofer, engaged with the Skills Support for the Workforce (SSW) programme to upskill himself and progress in his career. He aimed to complete a Level 2 NVQ diploma in waterproof membrane roofing systems and gain his blue Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) card, which would prove his skills and enable him to work on larger construction sites.

Training Requirement:

Prior to starting the NVQ, Lewis had experience working as a teaching assistant and maths teacher, but decided to become a roofer for a more active and hands-on job. Despite having A-levels, he had no qualifications in construction. His goals were to gain more experience, work on his own, pass his Level 2 NVQ, and progress to become a Site Contracts Manager.

Training Intervention:

Lewis was assigned to assessor Steve Cross, who helped him complete his Level 2 NVQ in waterproof membrane roofing systems through on-site assessment. The training allowed Lewis to gain more responsibility and work independently, preparing him for future opportunities and responsibilities.

Impact and Outcomes:

Completing the NVQ enabled Lewis to gain his blue CSCS card, proving his skills and opening up new job opportunities for him. He hopes to progress his career further by completing an NVQ Level 4 in Site Construction Management and becoming a Site Contracts Manager.

Overall, Lewis’ case study demonstrates the positive impact that upskilling can have on individuals and businesses. The SSW programme has provided Lewis with the skills and qualifications he needed to progress in his career, aligning with the programme’s goal of enhancing equal access to lifelong learning.
